Jay believes in using cognitive approaches in piano instruction. This means he’ll teach you how to think about something before doing it, rather than just doing it until you understand it. When teaching children, Jay finds inspiration in psychologist Jerome Bruner’s statement from The Process of Education (1960):

“We begin with the hypothesis that any subject can be taught effectively in some intellectually honest form to any child at any stage of development.”
